Last year my neighbor spent a lot of time banging, building and retrofitting a room in his garage. One day he invited us over to see his masterpiece. It turns out that all that construction was to build a home beer making operation! It is a real life brewery 50 yards from my house!

Now that he is in full operation, his wife dropped by the other day with a bag of star shaped treats made from the malted spent grains left over after the brewing process. They looked delicious!

I reached in to try one but she stopped me just in time. They weren’t for me…they were for Alva, Emma and Viola. With a wink and a grin, she said they had only natural ingredients including peanut butter and would need to be refrigerated.

SO, of course the dogs loved them. For those of you who make your own beer, try this recipe the next time you make up a batch. (Note: dogs are allergic to hops so make sure these grains have not been in contact with any hops.)

You can also get the spent grains from your favorite local brewery. They need to be used immediately or quickly frozen or refrigerated after brew day. When you make some, please send us pictures to post!

What you will need...

Ingredients:

• 2 cups of spent grain

• 1 cup of flour

• ½ cup peanut butter

• 1 egg

What you will do...

Step 1

_____________

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Meanwhile, mix all ingredients thoroughly in a bowl. Separate into three dough balls. If your dough is sticky, you can toss in a little extra flour as needed.

Step 2

_____________

Dust your clean and dry countertop with flour. Use a rolling pin to flatten out your dough balls. Then, find your cutest cookie cutters to cut out perfectly lovely shapes. Make sure the treats are the appropriate size for your dogs. My dogs are tiny but yours might be much larger! Then, place on a cooking sheet and put it into the oven. No need to grease the cookie sheet.

Step 3

_____________

Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes. Turn the heat down to 220 degrees and cook an additional 2 hours to dry them out. This last time may vary depending on the thickness of your cookies and your oven.

Step 4

_____________

Remove from the oven and cool. After giving your dogs a freshly made yummy treat, store the remainder in an airtight container and refrigerate.
